On a small Danish island sits a simple summerhouse, built right next to the coastline and with an open meadow landscape as a backdrop. The natural stone house, with a pitched roof that takes its inspiration from nature, is situated on a small plinth that acts as coastal protection against severe storms and elevated water levels.

HAS design and research Studio / HAS design and research

HAS design and research Studio also called Phetkasem Artist Studio, is hidden in the residential suburbs of Bangkok, and is a typical commercial housing in Thailand. This commercial housing typology was mass-produced by developers 30 years ago, and it instantly spread to numerous capital cities in Southeast Asia, resulting in a sense of indifference to cityscapes. Yet, in this village, the residents exhibit a different lifestyle from the typical residential units. They built fences to obtain a larger garage area, added roofs for more storage space, and extended rain sheds to meet the flexibility of the ground-level commercial possibilities. In addition, they used potted plants, which sometimes even obstructed the roads, to satisfy their vision of small gardens.

On the site of the oldest merchants’ quarter, Lübeck’s founding quarter, which was heavily destroyed in World War II, gabled townhouses are being built in a self-contained design on the original plots of land. Their density and mixed-use are based on historical models.

Blade House / Tecture

When our client had nominated Concrete as their preferred and the principal material for their home, we were thrilled to be able to drive our team’s knowledge to explore a new construction methodology and design sensibility. With the entry into the site from the west, and the client’s request for a 5-car garage, we began to wonder, “how could we conceal such a large garage and not make the house feel like it’s about the vehicles?” Furthermore, designing a home with a southern backyard while also wanting to capture views and light to the north, can be challenging in the southern states of Australia. But for Blade House, we were fortunate to have a large, elevated site that inspired us to think about the layers and an extruded program.

The building is in the city of Seongnam, south of Seoul, South Korea. It stands on a lot at the end of an expanding neighborhood. The original conformation of the project land is irregular and is located between a neighborhood street to the south and a bordering terrain on the north side. The rectangular volume develops along the north side of the perimeter and fits into the urban context in a position set back from the road, underlining the desire to obtain an urban void that allows a pedestrian and vehicular entrance to the building.

House for Dani and Luis / vbrügg

July 23, 2022 Andreas Luco 0

The House for Dani and Luis is located in the suburbs of Córdoba and is designed for an older couple. The context presents two situations, the ring road and a residential neighborhood, which define the architectural form of the house. The program is ordered in a linear sequence arranged in a distorted grid by the trapezoidal site located in a corner. The organization of the spatial categories is symmetrical, with two wings, social and intimate, rotated 64°. Towards the ring road, a continuous wall 4 meters high defines the façade and delimits the domestic space. It is constituted as the container and circulatory referent of the house, which does not reveal its interior and gives the house a solid appearance of brick and stone.
