Villa R / Saunders Architecture

The Røksunds and their two children had been living on one of the islands in the Bømlo district to the south of Bergen for many years when they discovered plans for a new road and bridge would have a significant impact on their existing home. Given that the family loved the setting and surroundings, the solution was to build a new house on a hilltop site further away from the road that also offered a mesmerizing open vista across the islands.

Garden Garage / Studio North

In the developed neighborhood of Upper Mount Royal, the Garden Garage addresses a typical conflict between yard and garage by hybridizing these typologies into two intersecting landscapes. With an underused corner of their property that had excellent sun exposure and site access, the client approached Studio North with a request to create a building that enhanced both the backyard and driveway uses. The new garage and shed roof allows the two planes of the driveway and the backyard to coincide and ultimately enhance both programs.

Frame House / Ming Architects

This contemporary family home is sited directly opposite a lush park containing a children’s playground, lined by a row of mature rain trees which reach towering heights of ten to fifteen meters above the street. The house was designed to create direct views from the master bedroom and roof terrace onto the lush green canopies formed by the rain trees lining the park. The client’s brief was for a family home for a young couple with a young child. On the first floor, privacy was important, so we solidified the external wall, except for a small glass viewing panel to the street. On the second floor, to control incoming views from pedestrians looking into the master bedroom, we designed a set of sliding screens that can be closed for privacy when needed.

NORA Hair Salon has a total of 13 salons in Japan and abroad. This is the interior design project for NORA Ginza/U, the second NORA salon in Ginza. The site is on the 9th floor of a tenant building near Ginza station, with impressive light coming in through a large opening in the sweep window. The idea was to create a green space filled with light along this window surface and to arrange the cutting space, entrance, and shampoo area in order from this space to create a variety of spatial experiences depending on the distance from the window.

Carvolth Integrated Open Space – Goldenview Park / PMG Landscape Architects

May 9, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Carvolth Integrated Open Space represents a seamless combination of form and function, whereby stormwater management strategies are integrated with public recreational and educational programming into a 1.60-hectare linear green space. Carvolth IOS is comprised of three distinct landscape types, with a series of connected stormwater features reflecting the transition from more natural land to a public park to an urban plaza. Throughout these three landscape types, the common thread of water is ever present. Aesthetically, bold forms such as the water droplet reinforce the concept while delineating spaces and providing seating, retaining, and other functions. Visual art has been included with details that again reinforce the water concept, while subtle colors are used to complement the protected views of Golden Ears Mountain beyond. Many aspects of water have been incorporated into the design, from its visual representation in form, color, and pattern, to the inclusion of water itself in swales, water features, and water play, to more subtle auditory connections where the design allows for the sounds of water to be heard in those instances where it travels beneath pavers.

Hemlock House / Alexander Jermyn Architecture

May 6, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Situated on a gently sloping site on the edge of a lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, this residence re-interprets the alpine house type through a distinct material strategy. The winters in this region are severe and receive some of the highest snowfalls in the continental United States, often burying homes up to the roofline. In summer, wildfires are a constant threat. In response to these constraints, the design team installed mockups over a winter season to test material resiliency.

Two Houses And a Courtyard / Mostlikely Architecture

May 6, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

A family found their dream home in Klosterneuburg, Austria: a charming compact house from the 1950s at the front of the elongated plot and a beautiful view of the Danube from the back. Initially planning to demolish the existing house, we decided to integrate it into the new building project. A new house was inserted and oriented to create an atrium between the old and new building, connected by a common courtyard.
