March 23, 2022 Luciana Pejić 0

Located on a steep hillside above the Damariscotta River in mid-coast Maine, the Residence Hall supports the Bigelow Laboratory for Marine Science’s educational mission by providing living facilities for college students and visiting scientists. Originally programmed as a dormitory on the top of the hill with visiting scientist cottages down by the water, the design team combined the students and scientists in one shared facility midway between the labs and the waterfront. The Residence Hall is designed so the students and scientists can live and learn together, sharing meals, ideas, fellowship, and recreation.

The opportunity came for us to design a mixed-use building in the city of Santa Rosa, a small town located near the border with Argentina. Its horizontal landscape is marked by the surrounding farming fields, which still shape the visible limits of the city. In the last decade, a great number of new buildings have emerged, transforming the shape of the city with structures mostly alien to its urban life and identity.

The Iconic Maison New Farm – The Epitome of Living and Breathing Architecture – The concept of Maison was born, and a brief was conceived to deliver something completely innovative to the suburb, some of the main design elements encompassing soft curves, plank form concrete, and a major focus on landscaping. The core focus of Maison was the environment and adding a living, breathing piece of architecture that added significant aesthetic value to the New Farm streetscape. Yes, Maison had to offer residents unrivaled luxury internally, but it also had to give back to the suburb in terms of its presence.
