Artist’s Studio in Stepney in London / Martin Edwards Architects

January 14, 2021 Andreas Luco 0

A former public house situated within an east London conservation area, the building is thought to date from the late 1810s with later alterations, and originally formed the end of a Georgian terrace. The area was extensively damaged during WW2, including the substantial loss of the terrace and the original upper floor of the pub. What remained of the adjoining houses were demolished and renewed post-war, but the lower two storeys of the pub were repaired and continued to operate until the mid-1990s, when it was sold and subsequently converted to a dwelling.

Office Renovation in Old Factory / Qing Studio

January 14, 2021 罗靖琳 - Jinglin Luo 0

This project is an office space transformed from an old factory, located in the first Chongqing printing factory built in the 1930s. It’s like a newly built house, because light industry doesn’t leave much of a mark on the house. The interior space is 25 meters long, 5 meters wide and 6 meters high. This is not a small space for a team of less than ten people, but as a planning company, they have a unique way of allocating space: except for eight workstations and a leader’s office, the rest of the space is reserved for clients. Including one-on-one negotiations, round-table meetings, large screen display and presentation. In terms of space type, it is not like an office, but closer to a lecture hall or a small theater.

Urban Renewal of Chiado Neighborhood / Álvaro Siza + Carlos Castanheira

January 13, 2021 Pilar Caballero 0

Álvaro Siza’s restoration project for the pedestrian routes connecting one of the courtyards of the Carmo Convent (Patio B), Largo do Carmo square, and the Carmo Terraces has been going on for over two decades. It seems that recovery plans only happen when there is a catastrophe. The restoration of the Chiado area, due to a fire in 1988, has been gradually implemented, and some buildings that were destroyed, and others that were left intact, still required renovation, like so many others outside the area.

Valley Retreat / Wang Weijen Architecture

Xiaoyouhe Valley is a narrow river valley located at the foothills of Wangwu Mountain in Jiyuan, China. The natural ecology and agricultural settlements are still visible in the valley. To promote local cultural tourism, the design of the Valley Retreat rethinks the role that tourist facilities play in such an environment by integrating natural topography, vernacular building types, and rammed earth construction techniques. The subsequent design transforms abandoned farmland into an ecological and cultural retreat.

January 10, 2021 Pilar Caballero 0

The Bugio project consists of transforming the entire interior of a duplex apartment located on the top floors of a building that preceded the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755. As the apartment was small and the client wanted to maximize the number of bedrooms, one of the strategies was to reduce circulation spaces to the minimum possible, changing the entire interior organization in order to make the relationship between spaces more effective, but always preserving the characteristics of the original apartment.

January 9, 2021 Andreas Luco 0

Located in Setúbal, this house with a ground floor and a basement, was substantially remodelled by recreating compartments to make it more spacious, functional and with natural lighting. Many steps have been taken in this direction, let’s get to know them! The separation between social and private spaces was a fundamental part of this work, a goal only possible to achieve by creating a sanitary installation next to the hall, relocating the storage and laundry facilities in the large basement. Beyond the available space, the basement has others outstanding features like the incidence of natural lighting and direct access to exterior patio.

Opportunities:
On December 2,2016, the World Industrial Design Conference opened successfully in Liangzhu Industrial Design Town, and the presence of Vice Premier Ma Kai of the State Council reflected a deeper understanding of the value of design to the economy  society in China. Thanks to China’s attention and sufficient resources, the Industrial Design Town has been identified as the permanent venue for the international communication conference. At the same time, the operation department needs to provide office and exhibition facilities for the resident agencies of the national industrial design associations. Based on the principle of nearby site selection and collective effect, the base of the project was finally determined in Qiu Jia Wu Village near the industrial design town.
