House of Quartz / Archisan

January 10, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

House of Quartz is an architecture imagined as a crystallization of all living energies. It shines, reflects, and magnifies everyday phenomena to channel and amplify their vibrant frequencies. It is solid and porous and acts as a skeletal base for all life forms. The spaces are conceived as anti-gravitational to be free of modern typologies. The building is a low-tech architecture and a mixed-use building with different unit configurations but essentially does not distinguish between life/work/play. The windows rotate 360 degrees, conceived as a lens to view the surroundings and to reflect and observe our inner being.

The Railway Department Park, part of the National Taiwan Museum, occupies a site that carries 130 years of Taiwan’s urban transformation. The first railway of Taiwan originated here during the Qing Dynasty to service the Machinery Bureau, which manufactured weapons. It later became the Taipei Artillery Factory and the Taipei Railway Factory in 1900. The site sits adjacent to modern-day Taipei Main Station, the transportation hub for both the city and northern Taiwan. Designated as a national historical monument, the museum park is one of the green focal points in the ambitious Taipei West District Gateway Project. This urban renewal masterplan stretches across almost a third of downtown Taipei.

K.house is a garden house in the center of Phan Thiet city. It is a new house built entirely based on the memories, lifestyle, and living habits of the old house where the family has lived for over 30 years. Memories of a quicksand road leading from the small gate to the house, on both sides were two long rows of sugar cane, later replaced by two rows of custard apple trees, then a row of boarding houses.

Naturalizing Living Spaces for Urban Townhouses. In the face of the expanding and thriving urban developments in Vietnam today, designing houses in limited spaces while meeting diverse functional needs poses a challenging task for architects. SkyGarden House, a townhouse in Nha Trang City, located in Central Vietnam (A region characterized by a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons), was constructed on a non-square 100 Sq.m plot of land; this presented a challenge in the design process.

Creating comfort by connecting tenements. The problems faced by collective housing in cities include the problems of ensuring privacy within the neighborhood and the comfort of the dwelling units due to the narrowness of the site and the difficulty of creating townscapes and opening them to the community while realizing these. I aimed to solve them and discover the advantages and characteristics of living together in small groups. Then, I wondered whether the existence of other dwelling units in the collective housing would not hinder privacy or lighting and ventilation and would rather create a comfortable structure.

Le Kawan House / W+M Design Studio

When we visited the site, we were mesmerized by the forest surroundings and a beautiful traditional Javanese house called ‘Joglo’ that the family used to live in occasionally. That house was no longer sufficient to accommodate the client’s needs, so they needed to build other buildings as an extra living space. As the traditional house is preserved, the new buildings are designed to harmonize with the traditional house – with a modern twist.
