The character of this modest garden extension is created from the expression of a simple structural construction. Standard timber joists, at 600mm spacings, cross in both directions to allow for a free span between 2 rendered blockwork cavity walls. The timber beams sit on shallow pilasters formed where the blockwork is turned through 90 degrees to provide laterally restraint and to give a subtle relief to the bearing walls.

This small residential project is located near Frank Lloyd Wright’s Yamamura residence in Hyogo pref. Japan. The house sits in between two rivers enabling the house free from using any air conditioning equipment by letting the river breeze into the house. This is made possible by planning a neutral zone between the interior and exterior perimeter covered with louver sliding doors. These louver sliding doors control light, wind and the privacy of the house by moving them according to the daily weather or the time of the day.

The large terrain with privileged views allowed the residence to be developed on a single floor. Only the master bedroom swings over the slope toward the adjacent lake. The façade for the street is composed of low horizontal volumes, accommodated according to the shape of the terrain. The large side of the rooms block is lined with a cumaru muxarabi that filters the light while ensuring privacy.

Along the entry of the village, various historic buildings are to be found such as mansions or farmhouses. The concept of concentrated construction was achieved by building a multi-family dwelling for 6 families instead of the initial single-family house. The proportions of the existing buildings in the surrounding were therefore analyzed and applied on the new project.

Located in Nha Trang, a sea side city of Vietnam’s south east coast, this residence is 1 of 3 vacation villas (the stone house, the timber house and the glass house) with a very privileged location. Carved into the hill, the site of 420 sqm enjoys a unique ocean view, overlooking the bay and mountains in the background. However, the high construction density of the street will affect in the future the sea views if not anticipated. The main design goal was to find solutions at early stage of the conception to optimize this viewing experience and manage the high constructions density of this residential area in the future, accordingly to the local urban regulation.
