This is a shopping complex embodying apparel brand Onward Kashiyama’s concept of “stimulating the five senses, and find the diverse of sensibilities.” A café on the basement floor connects to the ground level where a gallery and lounge area can be used for events and exhibitions. The second and third floors are dedicated to fashion, and a restaurant on the fourth floor which leads to a small bar located on the highest level of the building.

The Steffens residence is located on a high-lying site in the Finkenstein Estate to the east of Windhoek where privacy, open space, protection of fauna and flora, and a peaceful atmosphere are the primary objectives. Individual properties here are about 1ha in size, but its fenced-in development area is restricted to a maximum of 2,500sqm to encourage the free-roaming of the game – springbok, kudu, eland, warthog, etc. – throughout the estate.

The house sited on a small 222m2 plot in a very crowded semi urban locality in Kerala’s capital city is overlooked by three floors of classrooms of an adjacent educational institution. The Clients – a small family comprising of an engineer, a doctor & their son, wanted their home to be a private and homely oasis amidst the crowded bustle of their busy locality. This presented an acute design challenge, but nonetheless was also typical for residential briefs in dense urban contexts. The design solution that evolved opted for a cuboid envelope, perforated with a brick lattice façade for the front elevation. This approach helped maximize built-up area, whilst allowing for air circulation without sacrificing privacy for the occupants.

Harbour Club / LEVS architecten

Project Harbour Club in Amsterdam’s quickly developing eastern neighborhood Cruquiuseiland is finished. The complex volume is a collage of old and new buildings and an unconventional program. There are the left-over industry-sized wine silos that have been turned into rooftop villas. Then there is the club at the heart of the new building, sound-proofed and structurally isolated to such an extent that it was possible to build apartments directly above it. Finally, there is the original building from 1901, neatly encapsulated by the new building and topped up with a green roof. The result exudes the same playfulness and eagerness with which LEVS architecten made and worked out the design for Amvest.

Except for the covered forecourt on the ground floor, the structure is kept compact. The forecourt is dominated by the top floor and creates a valuable horizontal surface on the mountain. The primary relationship to the outside space is created by ceiling-high window areas, which are oriented analogously to the balconies and terraces east, south and west.

The house is in a small ward in Dong Nai province in Vietnam. The owner is a young software engineer. He wants an “open house” for his kind mother and lovely sister. Their request is to connect people in the house with the altar because they want to celebrate some Vietnamese traditions’ holidays, such as Tet, death anniversary, wedding day, etc. and they can easily organize rituals with their ancestors. With this request, we designed the house with two private boxes for the bedroom and some auxiliary spaces. Outside these boxes are the common spaces where is possible to gather many people on some traditional Vietnamese holidays. In between the two boxes is a big void with the function of being the dining room.

The Foliage House / VPA Architects

Spanning in the plot size of 22800 sft, sits The Foliage House. The name is interestingly derived from the beautiful green patch of plot our client had. The plot is located in a developing suburb of Ahmedabad. It already had many mature trees on site; along the periphery as well as in the plot. The ones of the periphery were various trees like bamboo, cherry blossom and neem, while the ones in the plot were chickoo and mango trees. This sight made us and the client fall in love with this piece of land. And thus began our design journey with a clear aim to sustain all the existing trees.

According to an official statistic in 2020, urban townhouses accounted for more than 88% of the total of 1.92 million homes in Ho Chi Minh City. However, many outdated and degraded townhouses do not meet with the modern lifestyle and higher living standards of the next generation anymore. Understandably, renovating old townhouses in order to well accommodate contemporary living needs has become a very challenging yet inspiring type of work for many local architects.
