realized as part of the penjiwaan community in bali, alexis dornier has designed the butterfly house as a place that blurs the line between indoor and outdoor environments. situated just 10 minutes from ubud, the new residence combines a natural material palette with a structure that is raised off the ground on columns, resulting in open living spaces that flow into the surrounding landscape.

the plan of the house is formed in two components: a cross and a circle. the circle, which surround the cross, contains spaces such as the atelier, pool and sound studio. the cross marks the primary building element, which at first floor level is articulated by the stilts. within these columns, more social spaces are comprised, including the kitchen, living and dining area. thanks to the open structure, this area creates a continuous landscape that forms the heart of the home and seamlessly merges with the surrounding nature.

 

 

at first floor level, the cross is elevated and holds the more private bedroom spaces. projecting in four different directions, the cross shape allows specific views to be framed for each of the four bedrooms. to form the roof, alexis dornier makes reference to vernacular silhouettes while bringing a touch of contemporary design to create an volume that visually connects to neighboring houses and continues the rhythm of the surrounding architecture.

 

 

the material palette is dominated by the appearance and use of reclaimed timber. from the structural columns to the ceiling and floor finishes, wood has been utilized in various patterns, creating a warm and inviting home environment that perfectly befits the tropical island of bali.
