Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Dhaka / Uygur Architects

December 12, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

The structure of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Dhaka is located on the main road of a district reserved as the Diplomatic Site. It resides on a plot that neighbors the Embassy of the Republic of Korea on one side, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the other, as well as the Embassies of Canada and the United States of America across the road. The smaller land size in comparison to the neighboring embassies and the intensive content of the requirements program can be considered as one of the challenging aspects of the project process. The program mainly includes the consulate, chancery, ambassador’s residence, reception rooms, lodgment, and guest accommodation units. As the size of the land is not suitable for solving the intensive requirements program with a fragmented scheme, the user groups with different circulation relationships, privacy, and security needs are separated from each other and resolved in one focal structure.

The Gamelle Laboratory / Inrestudio

December 12, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

The Gamelle is a small laboratory for product inspection in a factory in central Vietnam. Located by the sea at the edge of the site, the building aims to provide views of nature while protecting it from excessive exposure to the sea breeze. An outer wall encloses both functional rooms and exterior spaces, constituting a porous structure to mediate between the internal and external environment. The project has the ambiguity of the entity: eye-catching like a solid pavilion, and yet eye-penetrating to the scenery beyond with its transparency.

HOVER SPACE Extension to the KLE Society Head Office / Thirdspace Architecture Studio

December 12, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

Could an existing structure be extended without really disturbing it or even barely touching it? How can the new negotiate with the old so that each retains their own identity and yet are cohesive together? These were among the many questions we asked ourselves when a reputed educational charity institution needed additional space for their 50-year-old, two-story corporate office. The existing office, though nondescript, was nevertheless a space that had significance to the Institution’s collective memory, and it was sought to be retained out of a sense of historicity. The offices were always bustling with activity and had undergone a mid-life retrofit, so any addition to the top would have to be done in a manner that did not disturb or disrupt the workings of the office. Therefore the challenge was to intervene in a manner that the existing office would not be affected in its functioning nor would its interiors be damaged through intrusive structural works.

Alphington Townhouses / Green Sheep Collective

December 11, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

These four townhouses present an innovative approach to the design of medium-density housing. Each townhouse has been designed with excellent connections to the outdoors, maximized access to north light, and natural ventilation. Internal spaces allow for flexibility and the varied lifestyles of inhabitants. The challenge was to provide designs that allowed north light to as many spaces as possible on the four north-south sites while balancing sustainable design features and material selection with the project budget and intended resale values. The ‘end user’ was not known, so design features and materials had to be flexible, low-maintenance, and have a low environmental impact, to provide value for potential purchasers.

New Kyoto Town House 4 / Alphaville Architects

December 11, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

Stacking Tsuboniwa Gardens – Traditionally, Kyoto has had a high planar density with townhouses in rows on a narrow strip of land and a low cross-sectional density. With low-rise buildings lining the street, that rich living space has been secured by arranging external spaces such as street gardens and tsuboniwa on a planar scale. Today, however, while the planar density remains the same, there is a growing demand for mid to high-rise buildings in cross-sectional terms, and houses must devise ways to incorporate effective exterior spaces in the new situation while taking advantage of the special characteristics of the city.

Inclined Home / casa design studio

December 11, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

Inclined home is a place perfect for relaxation and retirement life. To create such an experience, it was important to enhance its surroundings. One of the major positives of the site is its entry from the east. A good amount of warm morning sunlight enters the house through the large openings. At the entrance, four trees are planted to enhance the shade and the shadow of the house. These create different patterns at different times inside the house. The residence does not block the views of the surrounding. The landscape of the house is dominated most by tropical plants. The water body adjacent to the sit-out and pooja room has a small planter box in which Plumeria rubra is planted, giving an island effect that also creates an internal aura of reverence and tranquility.
