Shinonome Shinkin Bank in Maebashi / HAGISO

December 21, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

Completed in 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics, this building was built as the headquarters of the Maebashi Shinkin Bank, which was the predecessor of the present Shinonome Shinkin Bank after its merger. The company put much effort into building the state-of-the-art steel-reinforced concrete structure at the time. However, an earthquake resistance assessment conducted in 2015 revealed some problems with the structure. When we joined the project, the policy was to rebuild the building. However, the structural engineer’s inspection revealed that there were no fatal defects in the existing structure and that the building could meet the earthquake resistance standards by restoring the balance, making renovation a feasible option for the project. In addition, the project involved a plan to relocate the nearby FM Gunma building to the site from the beginning. The unprecedented co-location of the regional media and the regional financial institution would hopefully create greater synergy between the two companies sharing the same area.

Since the owner was a child, the family’s main income came from her mother. The owner’s mother’s job was to bring the coconuts from her garden to sell at a floating market. The mother continued this job until the owner grew up and has her own family. After the owner is able to sustain the family, she wants her mother to stop selling coconuts at the floating market, rest, and spend time with her children, therefore, she intends to build a house for her mother to live in and to use as a family gathering place. The site is a coconut garden located in Amphawa district, Samut Songkhram, Thailand. Only 1 Kilometer from the site, there is the Amphawa floating market which is famous for local Thai desserts, and Thai food, and a boat trip along the Mae Klong River to see fireflies.

Nightlight Shed / Fabric

December 20, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

Nightlight fills a small gap in a historic clearing of the kānuka belt wrapping around the Akaroa township in Banks Peninsula, New Zealand. Practically this building was to provide services for living and tool storage for the owner’s long-term vision to regenerate the land and build their forever home. Once that home is complete, this temporary home needs to slot into and enhance its surroundings, rather than detract from them.

Cua’s House / 3fconcept

December 19, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

Hue is the ancient capital of Vietnam, this city still has an ancient appearance and stores many heritages. The downtown area is really narrow, plus the harsh humid tropical climate, which is extremely hot in summer and rainy in winter. Therefore, most of the residential architecture here is still a tube house with a rather boring, old, and safe architectural form.

How Gastronomy Activates Community Spaces Across Copenhagen

December 19, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

Through its New Nordic cuisine, the food scene in Copenhagen has been growing in popularity and is becoming a major appeal for inhabitants and visitors. Its rooted and seasonal gastronomy as well as its traditional convivial concepts make any food experience in the city a wholistic one as it is linked to the produce, the ambiance, and of course the setting. An enjoyable meal, in what is one of the happiest cities in the world, requires specific localization, design, and planning that can nurture communal and leisure activities. Such spaces should become even more coveted as Copenhagen hosts the UIA World Congress of Architects.
