Washington D.C. has earned a reputation for iconic architecture. Emerging from the L’Enfant and McMillan Plans, Washington’s cityscape includes wide streets and low-rise buildings that sprawl out from circles and rectangular plazas. From the White House to Lincoln Memorial, Washington’s architecture was built to symbolize the nation’s values. Today, new projects are designed to rethink the city’s morphology while respecting its identity.

Changzhou Culture Plaza / gmp Architects

The Changzhou Culture Plaza is surrounded by a public park and, together with the Town Hall and the Changzhou Grand Theater located to the north, forms the new city center of Changzhou. The development comprises six identical, freestanding building modules that are angled towards each other and arranged in a 2 x 3 cluster. Each module is based on a footprint area of 70 x 70 meters and, as an autonomous unit with individual entrance and lobby, accommodates one of the functions of the Culture Plaza, such as the art museum, library, hotel, and offices.

Wagenhallen Stuttgart Cultural Center / ATELIER BRÜCKNER

The Wagenhallen in Stuttgart were erected at the end of the 19th century in order to take some of the pressure off the main railway station at the time. They were initially used for locomotives and later for buses as a maintenance and repair depot. After being converted and extended several times, the Wagenhallen became established as a location for cultural uses from 2003 onwards.

KPMB and Omar Gandhi Win Competition to Design Nova Scotia’s New Art Gallery

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has announced KPMB and Omar Gandhi Studio have won the competition to create a new gallery along the Halifax waterfront. The new gallery and arts district, located on the Salter Block of the coastline, was designed as a new AGNS that offers an array of accessible experiences for all senses, and at all scales. The final design embodies a vision of a place for all seasons, rooted in sustainability, connecting the city at the water.

Fernando Martirena: “Contemporary Cuban Architecture is Alegal and Almost Non-Existent”

“What Are We Talking About When We Walk about Contemporary Cuban Architecture?” is the title of the article written by Fernando Martirena in Rialta Magazine that delves into the reality of architecture within Cuban society. Essentially, it receives so little attention that it might as well not exist. This prompted the birth of the Cuban Architecture Studios Group (Grupo de Estudios Cubanos de Arquitectura), of which Martirena is a member, a collective that aims to give modern Cuban architecture a platform and a voice.

The Getty and USC Launch Talks Shedding Light on the Impact of Architect Paul R. Williams

Paul Revere Williams, the late architect who was the first black member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), has recently been receiving some long-overdue recognition. The AIA awarded him a posthumous gold medal in 2017; a PBS documentary “Hollywood’s Architect: The Paul R. Williams Story” aired in February, and a book titled “Regarding Paul R. Williams: A Photographer’s View” was published in September.
