Located in downtown Toronto, Regent Park is Canada’s oldest and largest social housing project, built in the late 1940’s. The community has historically been viewed as a transitional community for new immigrants, but due to social and physical planning ills, has contributed to the concentration of a socially marginalized population. 41% of the population living in Regent Park are under 18, and over 70% of the population lives below the Low-Income Cut-Off Rate.

Extending a house means reducing the exterior space of a plot. The theme of the project that we developed for the “landscape house” is the restitution of an exterior space. The site of the project is located in Nantes (France), in an area established on a ridge of the Armorican Massif. The 300mÂČ plot hosts at its bottom a small house as a testimony to the past worker of the neighborhood.

Juniper House / Murman Arkitekter

This house is more than a weekend cottage. This house is an experiment. You approach it via a cul-de-sac that ends in a sheep fence towards the open moor. There is a grove of high junipers and a couple of white plastered houses visible. Embedded in a glade 5 meters to the right lies Juniper House. The house is barely visible, like a mirror of its own surroundings.

House at Mols Hills / Lenschow & Pihlmann

Four small houses enclosing a central courtyard are the basic frame-like structure for this summer residence by the shore of mainland Denmark. The exterior of the house is modest- even slightly introverted – but entering the courtyard reveals a spatially open house with a warm pinewood interior. Glass doors and sliding partitions ensure visual contact between rooms across the courtyard and also provide a clear and unhindered view over the bay.

Seen from a distance the floor plates projecting from the facade with their elliptical openings look like flying carpets with ornamental borders. For the residents these elliptical openings generate a sense of distance, since they prevent neighbours from seeing into each other’s apartments.
