TLP is located in a residential neighborhood on the upper part of a hill in the city of Tijuana, an incredibly dynamic city that sits on the world’s busiest land border with the city of San Diego. The house is composed of three volumes that contain the main living spaces. The shape of these three volumes, trapezoidal prisms, respond to the irregular shape of the plot.

KA House is a vacation home for a couple, who enjoy outdoor activities and spending their relaxing time in a grand courtyard,  where they can run ad play with family members or lay down for a great view toward the lake. The house was designed to enclose the grand inner courtyard. Therefore, the building lays closing to the entrance connecting with the fence. In that sense, the courtyard facing the lake view performs as an actual ‘entrance’, while the front access looks as if it is the rear of the house.

The main idea of the project was based in two elements: the existing walls, at different levels, and the platforms created by those walls. The elevations of the two house levels are broken lines that were created as continuation of the existing site walls. The topography helps to dissimulate the house.

Terraced-House Renovation / Edouard Brunet + François Martens

January 26, 2020 Cristian Aguilar 0

Taking into account the city’s urban tissue, the project is the renovation of a Brussels typical terraced-house. Originally inhabited by a single family, the house appeared too big and difficult to take care of after the children grew up and left. The owner of the house then decided to sell the last two floors to a friend, in order for him to convert them into his own appartement. The architectural project consists in renovating and turning the existing single family terraced houseinto a building of two separate flats. Architects Edouard Brunet and François Martens teamed up in order to complete this relatively small yet ambitious project.

My first thoughts when beginning the design were two recent phenomena concerning art museums throughout the world today. The first trend, which has become widely known as the “Bilbao Effect”, was born from the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, designed by Frank O. Gehry and completed in 1998. The strategy was to create sculptural architecture in an internationally unknown city to draw tourism, and it was ultimately a success. But there is an opinion that this kind of architecture spoils its functionality by disregarding the concerns of artists and staff, to produce a personal monument resulting in poor conditions for displaying and viewing art.

The building site of the Mausoleum of the Martyrdom of Polish Villages in Michniów is undergoing the successive fifth stage of construction works. The Mausoleum’s design envisaged a monolithic sculptural architectural form to give room to a multimedia exhibition which through its shape is to convey the dramaturgy of the historical developments symbolised by Michniów itself. The Mausoleum, designed by the renowned Warsaw-based studio Nizio Design International, is scheduled to be opened in 2016/2017.

This spacious villa is situated in Tremelo (BE), on a large terrain surrounded by pines. The house was designed for a couple with two children, that wanted something “special”. While in other designs OOA’s approach is very conceptual in the approach of design, here we just let it flow.
