studiobase architects has unveiled a sustainable design for on on nature restaurant in taichung, taiwan. the restaurant, which is located in front of a discarded train station mainly used for timber transportation, responds to the site’s history by using lam-wood throughout its construction as the main design feature to incorporate all requirements in the multi-functional building.

studiobase architects’ on on nature restaurant features a 52-meter-long façade composed of laminated wood columns. the south-facing glass curtain reflects the greenery from surrounding environment while allowing sunlight into the cafe on the 2nd floor. the exterior wood grille creates shade away from the sunlight and ensures the privacy of the residential units situated on the ground floor.
inside, the air ventilates through automated clerestory windows, where each window frame has been arranged between triangular metal supports that connect the roof and transoms. the split of the transoms help to reduce the load-bearing depth, making the structural relation between the metal support and the transoms to feel light and effortless.
the east wing functions as an office building, where a reinforced concrete structure aims to humble the overall expression, so it can be concealed behind the surrounding trees and undulating terrain. the entrance is led by a big staircase made by steel plates supported by an architectural concrete wall, so the hierarchy of construction elements can be read clearly. the semi-outdoor porch acts as the buffering space between stair and entrance, the space also initiates the rhythmic spatial experience provided by the façade and the structure.
