Casernes House / CAVAA Arquitectes

November 20, 2020 Valeria Silva 0

The restoration of Casernes was a project that aimed to showcase the history of the building and the modifications it had previously undergone throughout different eras. Gemma and Vicenç bought a row house that was divided into two separate dwellings – one located on the ground floor, and the other on the first floor, respectively. The building development planning had been very disjointed and, as a result, the building suffered from serious ventilation and lighting problems.

Goethe once wrote: “architecture is frozen music”. But for Julius Taminiau this didn’t feel right. “Architecture is not frozen or static, it’s dynamic, you enter a building, move through a building, the sun(light) and shadows change constantly, sometimes you see rain falling, the people (and vegetation) “using” the building are all moving and even the building could be moved by simply opening a window or a door.”

Nuwa House / Z_Lab

Nuwa is located in Nuha-dong, Seochon, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Seoul. It is the oldest village along with Bukchon and was the residence of the royal family, scholars, and the middle class since the Joseon Dynasty. After the Japanese colonial period, it was a village of writers and artists from various fields. It is a town where painters such as Chusa Kim Jung-hee, Jeong Sun, Lee Joong-seop, Lee Sang-bum, Park No-soo, and other poets and novelists such as Seo Jung-joo, Kim Dong-ri, and Yoon Dong-ju lived. We pondered the modern sense of spirit of entertainment and art that can be enjoyed in a small stay in Seochon where long history and diverse culture coexist.
