The Yanjiang Rural School is a school expansion project in a rural village in Jiangxi, China. The new school block replaced the old dilapidated structure to provide 13 classrooms for primary and kindergarten education with a library, accommodating 450 students from 5 surrounding villages.
The Bourse in Brussels has just reopened its doors, exchanging its status as an urban fortress built in the 19th century for that of a genuine public building, given back to the citizen for the next upcoming centuries. In doing so, it envisions a highly accessible, vibrant, and diversified future. The architects of the project are Bureau d’Etudes en Architectures Urbaines, Popoff architectes and Robbrecht en Daem architecten.
This project is born from the mansards rehabilitation of a 19th century building, with patrimonial value, located at the top of 8 de Maio Square, in the heart of Figueira da Foz.
The Montpellier Architecture School, situated in the Plan des 4 Seigneurs district, has undergone a significant transformation to embrace ecological priorities. The renovation project serves as a model of responsible architecture and an educational tool, aiming to balance heritage preservation with eco-friendly adaptations. Originally built in 1970, the school has seen various alterations, some in harmony with the original design and others not. In today’s context, ecological transitions are crucial not only in architecture but across society. The project aimed to integrate architectural rehabilitation with thermal renovation, preserving the existing while accompanying the building in its ecological transition.
A large space, located inside a historic Italian villa in Brianza and built on an ancient Roman “castrum,” has been abandoned for decades, only to be used as a storage. This space, adjacent to a church and the entrance to the villa, has now been converted into a multipurpose space for events and exhibitions. A hidden gem of rare beauty that recalls a typical craft in Brianza, that is viticulture and grape pressing. An almost mystical and sensory space that evokes and brings back to life an ancient way of working and living.
A renovation and expansion project that enhances the building’s efficiency while respecting its original designers’ architecture. Designed in the 1950s by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and Luigi Fratino, the 12-floor Tower of the Permanente was an addition to the building of the same name, which was designed and built in 1886 by Luca Beltrami, in Via Filippo Turati in Milan. Currently housing the Museo della Permanente, the complex is located in a strategic area on a thoroughfare connecting the city center and the Central Station.
The Healing Hills Villa was originally a deserted courtyard atop a small hill, surrounded by lush green trees with twisting roots, making it feel as if it were protected by 48 old camphor trees. The transformation of the architectural space relies entirely on the relationship with the trees—neither encroaching upon them nor isolating them. There are three strategies. First, the scattered buildings were integrated into three courtyards, each relatively independent yet closely connected. Second, the boundaries between the built environment and the natural surroundings were blurred, allowing trees to coexist within the courtyards and the courtyards to extend into the trees, creating a seamless interaction between architecture and nature. Finally, new functions were infused based on the distinct characteristics of each space, creating a bridge of experience between the “artificial” and the “natural”.
The project is located in Porrentruy, a small town in the Swiss Jura. A modest three-story house, positioned at the end of a long street, had quietly fallen into disrepair. Originally built in the late 1960s, with no distinctive architectural heritage or attention to detail, it served as a typical affordable residence for a single family. Despite its deterioration, the building retains potential due to its proportions, location, and core structure. Rather than opting for demolition and a complete rebuild, the project seeks to preserve and repurpose the existing structure, giving it a second life while maintaining its original function.
Commissioned by Leiden University, De Zwarte Hond has completed the circular renovation and extension of the former Cluster Zuid building of the Faculty of Humanities. Architect Joop van Stigt designed Cluster Zuid for the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University in the late 1970s. This impressive example of structuralist architecture was re-inaugurated on 8 October as Herta Mohr. It now offers 11,400 m² of space, plus car parking, with more than 700 teaching spaces and self-study places, two lecture theatres, work and meeting rooms, and common rooms. The building also houses the libraries of Leiden’s African Studies Centre and the Middle Eastern Studies program.
The Sarv House dates back to the year 1970 before the reconstruction project began. The new owner of the house wanted us to give our opinion on whether he should keep the house or tear it down and replace it with an apartment.
