This week on Dezeen, we welcomed the new year by spotlighting the architecture projects and interior design trends that are expected to characterise 2023.
Among the most unusual buildings scheduled to complete this year is the Sub-Center Library in Beijing (pictured above), which Snøhetta is designing to resemble a forest canopy, and a brutalist pyramid in Tirana that is being renovated by MVRDV.
Adjaye Associates is expecting to finish construction of its multifaith complex in Abu Dhabi, while in Jerusalem, SANAA will open its Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design campus.
Dezeen also spoke to 12 designers and architects who shared the trends that they predict will define the next year of interior design.
Among them were 2LG Studio’s designers Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead, who believe this year will see weird and wild interiors that reflect the “violent time we are living in”.
“There is anger in the world and design needs to reflect that dynamism and not shy away from it,” the duo said.
In design news, British startup Water-Filled Glass hit the headlines with its windows that are filled with water and designed to use sunlight to heat and cool buildings.
Meanwhile, technology company Digby and furniture brand Heller launched the Digby Design Authenticator, which uses NFTs to certify the authenticity of physical design products.
Zaha Hadid Architects was in the spotlight as it revealed a series of modular tent classrooms that it has created for displaced communities in the Middle East. The structures were one of the last to be designed by the studio’s late founder, Zaha Hadid.
In the US, Snøhetta unveiled its plans for the Miami outpost of New York’s Museum of Sex, which will be housed in a converted warehouse space.
Industry figures that made the news this week included Lesley Lokko, who was recognised in King Charles III’s New Year Honours list, and UK housing secretary Michael Gove, who supported the idea of a new architecture school to “revive traditional architecture”.
French architect and social housing advocate Renée Gailhoustet passed away at the age of 93 at her home in Paris.
This week, popular projects featured on Dezeen included the Cast House extension by EBBA, a minimalist sailing yacht interior by Norm Architects, and a clifftop hotel by Pedra Silva Arquitectos.
