Through drastic re-building in about 4 decades, Tehran has gone from a city of infinite gardens with its single-family dwellings, to a city of infinite apartment blocks. This significant lifestyle change that has occurred within its urban fabric, has impacted issues such as shared ownership, privacy, safety, territory, collective memory, and most importantly, the quality of the living space. Tehran’s current schemes are mostly constructed by developers, whose main criteria are ease of construction, convenience, and cost, compromising spatial quality. This approach has shaped a metropolis with no contextual roots or stories to tell. This is Tehran’s current cityscape. The main challenge of the project is how architecture can portray alternative ways of living, addressing the transition from a single-family dwellings to apartment buildings.

The Ryokan Manly House / Dform Project

The Ryokan is located in the heart of Manly, right in front of the famous Manly Beach, an iconic Australian beach frequented by tourists, surfers, and volleyballers. The building was originally a two-story Victorian-style tavern, built in the late 18th century. Over the years, two extra stories were built on top, turning it into a four-story mix-use building, with ground-floor shops and upper-story apartments.

Ladprao 80 House / Skarn Chaiyawat

Ladprao 80 House is a 150 square meter 2-story residence belonging to a newlywed couple, located amidst the hustle and bustle of central Bangkok, it neighbours a dense housing community and an industrial area of factories and warehouses. Because of the existing urban landscape, the architect’s main design challenge is to create a comfortable and private living space for the young couple within a limited budget of approximately 3 million Thai Baht.

Ledding Library / Hacker Architects

The new 20,000-square-foot Ledding Library occupies a unique position at the edge of downtown Milwaukie, Oregon, between a wetland natural area, a city park, and City Hall. The design aims to create a civic presence for the library, reflecting its esteemed position in Milwaukie’s history, community, and downtown core, while taking advantage of the unique natural setting. Its form draws inspiration from the natural movement of rivers, bending across the site to capture sweeping views of the neighbouring heritage Oak trees and waterway. Extensive use of wood on both the exterior and interior help to blend the library with its surroundings, creating a warm, welcoming, vibrant atmosphere. The vision for the new library was driven by four main principals developed with library staff, community members, and city council.
