Arts Center nOna / dmvA

About twenty years ago arts center nOna in Mechelen suffered from a lack of space. The existing Art-deco theatre hall had its limits and was no longer sufficient in terms of flexibility. In 1999 they had the idea to build a second theatre hall on the adjacent printing business site. In the meantime, the printing factory was transformed into three temporary rehearsal rooms for artists in need, called nOva. In 2016 the actual renovation and building of the extension of arts centre nOna started. The project fits in the urban planning of the city of Mechelen to boost the cultural axis between the Grand Place and the congress center Lamot. The site is situated in the middle of a block with a medieval alley that literally separates the new and old site. The new extension got embedded in the urban fabric by the succession of interior and exterior rooms with their own materiality and atmosphere.

Can Tomeu House / Andrea Solé Arquitectura

Located at the entrance of the Parc Natural de Garraf, just outside the town of St Pere de Ribes, Can Tomeu is one of the buildings belonging to the Masia Corral d’en Capdet, which was built around the year 1800 for agricultural and stone-crafting purposes. It is a piece of Catalan history and a national monument, meaning that the infrastructure needs to be kept in its original state wherever possible. Can Tomeu was originally intended for the labour force of the larger Masia, whcih was responsible for the maintenance of the entire finca. With time the abandoned building slowly deteriorated into a ruin, leaving only its bearing walls. The main purpose of the investment project was to restore this historical Catalan masterpiece to its original state, whilst using the opportunity to increase the volume of the buildings by 30%. Since the building completely lost its roof, the outside walls deteriorated and were worn down.

Located in Lagos, Casa do Canal integrated itself in the local’s typical urban mesh, defined by the marginal plans of the facades and by the narrow streets leading to the houses. Due to the limited space, it was considered legitimate to enhance the construction capacity of the site, stretching the building vertically. The house has only one front to the street, flanked by two buildings, built side by side and a back front where the interior space breathes through a small patio.

Okkio is a specialty coffee shop located in a small alley on Duy Tan Street. It occupies an old French colonial villa, an authentic half of a semidetached villa among a few that remain in the neighborhood. Duy Tan fondly recalls the memory of our beloved Saigon. Surviving the ups and downs of the city history, century-old parashorea trees stand tall along the pavements. Fortunately, the villa condition exceeds our expectation of time impact despite being quite aged.

The recovery and transformation of an old industrial building from 1920 into a museum, highlighting its special configuration in three naves and its interior textures, adding new layers that adapt it to the new use. The Oliva Artés industrial building was to be demolished in 2008 in the context of the new construction of the Central Park of Poble Nou, which planned to cut the continuity of the historic Pere IV street to which the building is closely linked. A few days before the entry of the excavators a neighbourhood association dedicated to the industrial heritage of Poble Nou convinced the City Council of the need to preserve the building, which at that time was in a state of structural ruin.

A series of stepped levels and angular windows designed by Proctor and Shaw open the ground floor of an Edwardian terrace house onto a quiet leafy garden in South West London. The clients charged Proctor and Shaw with the task of connecting the ground floor to the 1.2m dropped rear garden, challenging the architects’ to bring as much light and height into the new extension as possible.

We are planning to renovate an RC house built in the 1980s into a three-room hotel on Fukue Island, the largest island in the southern tip of the Goto Islands, located in the west of Nagasaki Prefecture. The hotel is located in a prosperous area with a coffee shop next to it and restaurants and shopping streets around it.
