The woodland classroom is located at the edge of the woods by an outdoor gathering space shared by a cluster of other small museum buildings. The program is two separate classrooms joined by a large roof. The space between the classrooms is a breezeway that frames views of the woods. Client Brief. The client came to us with a requirement to design a pre-primary school for about 80-100 students on a site, which was part of a commercial building abutting a large residential colony. The client (already having two operational schools) gave us a very clear brief for this new addition. She wanted a school that will stand out from the other preprimary schools in the vicinity so that the number of admissions increases. Maximum utilization of the space available across 3 floors and having a child-friendly premise was her prime requirement.

The Theatre School, DePaul University / Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects

March 15, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

The Theatre School is a gateway to DePaul University’s Lincoln Park campus. Used for both instruction and performance, the building welcomes students, faculty and staff during the day and theatergoers at night. Emphasizing openness and transparency, the building puts the excitement of a theater education on view for the neighborhood. The five-story building is a composition of rectangular forms clad in limestone, translucent glass and transparent glass. Projecting from the building at the corner is the Sondra & Denis Healy Theatre, serving as a sign for the university. The north façade softly glows at night, a beacon for the Theatre School. Similar to a scrim, the translucent glass wall can reveal the 100-seat flexible theater behind it.

Carrying out the project of a house for a group of Scouts required some previous research of the ways of living, educating, playing and organization these kind of associations have. From the beginning, the project was focused on the search of an inclusive space that would allow both group work and respect for the environment and their surroundings.
